Wayne Nelson (Pala Band of Mission Indians) is a traditional bird singer and the lead singer of the Inter-Tribal Bird Singers, a prominent collective of Indigenous singers and dancers. The group is dedicated to reviving and sharing ancient bird songs—sacred music accompanied by gourd rattles that pass down the creation stories, languages, and oral histories of Southern California tribes. A former member of the California Native American Heritage Commission, Nelson leads the group at gatherings, powwows, and cultural events across the Southwest to keep these living traditions vibrant for future generations.
